Marhaba! Mähallä is a creative and inclusive community hub for the Middle Eastern, North African, and Anatolian diaspora in Naarm (Melbourne) and beyond.
Our mission is to build a vibrant, supportive community grounded in shared experiences and cultural connection. We bring people together through events like film screenings, potlucks, cooking classes, open mic nights, club nights and more—creating space to celebrate, learn, and grow. By spending time in community and amplifying the diverse voices among us, we strengthen our ties to each other and to our cultural heritage.
Radio Mähallä showcases sounds from the region, and our community's genre-mashing, unique sound, ranging from Anatolian folk music - songs lamenting on themes of love, nature, morality, and faith - to wedding ballads, Arabesque melodies, and Aranjmans -a romantic style of music from Turkey and the Levantine region influenced by classical pop music.
While we pay homage to these nostalgic sounds, we have also been excited to witness the wave of contemporary music and club culture emerging from the SWANA/MENA region. This includes electronic dabke, experimental ambient, and poppy remixes of traditional rhythms—all showcased through bold producers, programmers, musicians, and artists.
These are sounds, forms of story telling and resistance through sonic liberation.
A tribute to our upbringings and experiences, and a celebration of our collective presence in the here and now.
Enjoy our takeover! All are welcome, just leave your shoes at the door.
